MELoR initiates actual assessment and investigations on the needs, issues and challenges that affect our rapidly growing older population.
We aim:
MELoR aims to achieve all of the above by inviting older Malaysians to participate in this study to address their concerns regarding their health and social protection from legal, economic / financial and educational aspects. We will also assess their housing and environmental needs.

- To increase the standards of facilities and services offered to elderly patients
- To create better awareness and educate the public of the needs and issues that the elderly face
- To learn every aspect from healthcare to economics, physical health, working and housing needs and education as well as social protection of the older person
- To provide a high standard holistic care for the elderly population
- To build a successful model for the care of the elderly and inform on policies and legislation requirements so our elderly community may have a secure future and better quality of life

THE FUNDAMENTAL AREAS COVERED IN THIS RESEARCH:
a. Medical aspects of ageing
- To identify social, biomedical and environmental factors associated with age related changes in health and wellbeing of older people to define the concept of healthy and successful ageing
b. Biotechnological aspects of ageing
- To explore the molecular changes that occur in ageing using genomics, metobolomics, transcriptomics and proteomics
- To measure body composition and model the human microvascular circulatory system for ageing people
c. Biomedical Engineering approaches of Health informatics and telehealth of ageing
- To develop health informatics and telehealth knowledge base and framework in the Malaysian ageing population
- To introduce health informatics and telehealth for diagnosis and prognosis for the health management of ageing people in Malaysia
- To develop a rapid non-invasive intelligent systems for early disease detection in the ageing population
d. Assistive technology and inclusive design and environments
- To build inclusive assistive systems to promote independent living in the community
e. Physical Activity
- To assess the level of physical activity with well-validated physical activity scales
- To develop a Physical Activity Consultation intervention to increase activity in older people
- To investigate the effects of Physical Activity Consultation in enhancing physical activity in older people
f. Development and validation of assessment tools
- To develop and validate assessment tools for social sciences and medicine that are suitable for the Malaysian elderly population
g. Planning for old age: Awareness, Attitudes and Education
- To identify major concerns and preparedness of the population towards ageing
- To identify the needs of older people for employment and learning
- To identify the appropriate programs for improving the quality of life of the aging population (e.g: Inter-generational Program), and identify how the younger and older generations may effectively transfer knowledge to and between each other
- To evaluate inter-generational interactions to develop continued participation in community activities
h. Economic aspects of ageing
- To acknowledge the economic capacity, potential and continued participation of the older person in the workforce
- To investigate the impact of structural changes at macro level on the well-being of older people, and that of their family members - in terms of self-reliance, self-esteem and financial needs
- To explore and facilitate strategies that promote active and productive ageing
i. Built Environment
- To inquire about the suitability of current housing provisions
- To inquire the difficulties encountered by older people in their existing environment
j. Ergonomics aspect of ageing
- To accommodate the elderly towards more independent living in their daily activities with essential design
- To propose the design of essential facilities within their accommodation (kitchen workstation, bedroom, toilet, etc.)
- To propose the design of essential facilities in the working environment (e.g: Office workstation with ergonomic chair and table for the elderly)
- To propose design facilities needed in a community environment (leisure activity, park, public transport etc)
k. Legal aspects of ageing
- To identify the needs of older people and to translate these needs into policies, laws and strategies for the comprehensive protection of older people
- To introduce policies, laws, and institutional strategies which are integrated and implemented for the continuous care of the ageing population; taking into account ever-changing needs, resources and circumstances
